The Atrum is built around three rich black velvet bars with red trim on each sleeve—the academic doctoral signal—paired with twin red embroidered crosses set high on the front panel. We chose a low-sheen velvet rather than satin so the bars and red crosses catch sanctuary light without glare on camera. The cut reads as a Geneva or pulpit robe rather than a choir gown, with a fuller skirt and bishop sleeves that move cleanly when you raise your arms to bless or read.
Signature Velvet Trim and Embroidery
Each velvet bar is cut, edge-finished, and hand-stitched onto the sleeve so it sits flat without puckering. Two red Latin crosses are satin-stitched onto the front facing in the same tonal red, giving the robe a coordinated, intentional look rather than a generic decorative band. The orphrey panel runs from collar to hem in a slim profile, drawing the eye vertically and helping the robe photograph well in livestream and broadcast settings.
Construction and Inner Build
A yoked back gives structure across the shoulders and feeds into deep cartridge pleats so the robe falls cleanly without bunching. The front closes with a covered two-way zipper hidden behind the orphrey, and the inside placket is reinforced so the robe hangs straight even after a long service. Sleeve cuffs are interlined to keep their shape, and the inner shoulders include a thin canvas so the velvet bars stay flat through movement.

The shell is a year-round wool-polyester blend (approximately 220–240 gsm) selected for a true matte finish, low sheen, and resistance to lint and shine on camera. Velvet trims are colorfast cotton-rayon. The robe is dry clean recommended; sleeves and orphrey can be steamed on low to relax travel creases. With reasonable care, the velvet retains its depth of color season after season.
