Rochets

What Is a Rochet Vestment?

A rochet vestment is a white, knee-length or calf-length garment similar in appearance to a surplice but with narrower sleeves, traditionally worn by bishops. It is part of episcopal choir dress, not a Eucharistic vestment. The rochet symbolizes clerical office, purity, and continuity with historic church tradition.

Rochet and Chimere Tradition

The rochet chimere combination forms one of the most recognizable elements of historic episcopal attire.

Typical layering includes:

Cassock (base garment)
Rochet (white vestment)
Chimere (sleeveless outer robe)
Tippet or preaching scarf

This attire is commonly seen in cathedral worship, processions, and formal church ceremonies.

Who Wears a Bishop’s Rochet

The rochet is traditionally worn by:

Bishops
Archbishops
Senior cathedral clergy
Church leaders in formal choir dress

It distinguishes episcopal rank within church hierarchy.

Liturgical & Ceremonial Use

Rochet vestments are worn during:

Cathedral services
Ordinations and confirmations
Processional worship
Choral offices
Formal ecclesiastical gatherings

They are associated with choir dress, not sacramental presidency.

Design Features of a Rochet Vestment

High-quality bishop’s rochets emphasize both dignity and comfort.

Lightweight breathable fabric
Narrower sleeves compared to surplices
Fine gathers at neckline and cuffs
Lace or plain sleeve options
