Description
A Formal Preacher Robe with Restrained Color
The Tenebris pairs the discipline of an all-black preacher robe with two slim cardinal-red orphrey stripes that frame the front. The design is intentionally restrained: the stripes are narrow, the crosses are sized to read at a distance without dominating, and the body fabric stays a true matte black so the red registers as a deliberate accent rather than decoration.
Twin Red Stripes and Embroidered Crosses
The two orphrey stripes are woven satin trim, mitered at the corners and double-stitched onto the front so they sit flat against the body fabric. Two red Latin crosses are satin-stitched between the stripes at chest height, in the same tonal red so the trim and embroidery read as one coordinated detail. The trim is colorfast and survives normal dry cleaning.
Construction and Inner Build
A yoked back and cartridge pleats give the body its full pulpit-robe drape, while a covered front zipper hidden behind the orphrey keeps the closure invisible. The placket is fused so the front edge stays straight, and inner shoulder canvas keeps the red trim flat against the body as you move.
Fabric, Weight, and Care
The shell is a year-round wool-polyester blend at roughly 230 gsm, chosen for true matte finish and clean drape under sanctuary and broadcast lighting. Trim is colorfast woven satin. Dry clean recommended; cool steam through a pressing cloth refreshes the front orphrey without scorching the red.
Who This Robe Is For
The Tenebris is a strong everyday-formal robe for senior pastors, denominational leaders, and ordained ministers who want a robe with subtle color without committing to a doctoral velvet bar. It works for Reformed, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal, and non-denominational settings, and pairs with a stole for those traditions that require one.

FAQs
Are the red stripes liturgically significant?
The stripes are decorative orphrey trim rather than a strict liturgical sign. Some traditions associate red with martyrdom or the Holy Spirit; the stripes are appropriate across denominations as an aesthetic accent.
Can I choose a different stripe color?
Yes. Made-to-measure orders can swap red stripes for purple, royal blue, or gold to align with denominational color preferences. Indicate your preference in the order notes.
Will the red bleed when dry cleaned?
We use colorfast satin trim selected to survive normal dry cleaning without bleeding into the black shell. Use a clergy-experienced cleaner for best long-term results.
Is this robe full enough to layer over a cassock?
Yes. The cut is full enough to layer comfortably over a slim Roman or Anglican cassock. If you plan to layer regularly, choose one size up or order made-to-measure with extra chest ease.
