Description

An Episcopal-Style Cassock for Ceremonial Wear

The Nocturnis takes its cue from episcopal and prelatic ceremonial dress, where polished metal buttons and metallic trim are used to mark formality without departing from black as the dominant colour. The cassock is single-breasted with a centre-front placket carrying brass-gold buttons sewn at close intervals, creating a distinct vertical line that draws the eye and reads with weight at distance. The bodice is shaped through the chest and waist, with a slim modern silhouette through the skirt rather than the fuller continental cut.

Buttons, Bullion Trim and Cuff Detail

Each button is a polished brass-gold dome, lacquered for tarnish resistance and stitched through a reinforced placket. Cuffs are finished with parallel rows of gold bullion piping, picking up the button colour and giving the sleeve hem a quiet ceremonial accent. The Roman stand collar is undecorated for a clean line under a clerical tab; a hidden hook-and-eye sits behind the throat button.

Construction and Lining

Side-entry pockets are bound through the side seam; an internal stole pocket sits at the bodice. The shell is fully lined through the bodice and half-lined through the skirt for breathability. A centre-back vent allows comfortable kneeling and walking. Internal stress points (under-arm gusset, hem facing, button placket) are reinforced for the additional weight of the metal hardware.

Fabric and Care

Cut from a four-season wool-polyester gabardine (approx. 55/45) with a clean matte finish chosen specifically not to compete with the polish of the brass buttons. Care: dry clean only; spot-clean buttons with a soft dry cloth; avoid liquid metal polishes which can damage the lacquered finish.

Who This Cassock Is For

Designed for clergy who require a formal, ceremonial cassock distinguished from everyday wear: bishops, cathedral deans, masters of ceremonies, monsignors when wearing house-cassock-with-trim, and clergy presiding at ordinations, jubilees, episcopal visitations and confirmations. Also a strong choice for clerical portrait sittings where metallic detail reads on camera.
