Description

The Roman Cassock in Royal Blue

Tranquilum brings the historic Roman cassock silhouette — 33-button placket, attached pellegrina shoulder cape, four cuff buttons — into a deep royal blue rather than the traditional black or violet. The cape adds a small but unmistakable note of authority and historical continuity that reads from across the sanctuary.

Attached Pellegrina Shoulder Cape

The signature feature is an attached short shoulder cape (pellegrina) cut in the same blue broadcloth, falling cleanly to mid-bicep. The cape is set into the shoulder seam rather than buttoned on, so it stays in place during processional walking and preaching gestures.

Tailoring & Construction

Mandarin clerical collar shaped for a 1.5” white tab, 33 self-fabric buttons running the full placket, four matched buttons on each cuff, two interior cassock pockets, felled side seams, and a deep tape-finished hem. The cape is fully lined to keep its shape.

Fabric & Care

Mid-weight polyester-rayon broadcloth in a sealed deep royal blue, with enough body to support the pellegrina cape without bulk. Dry clean only; have the cape supported flat during pressing to preserve its shape.

FAQs

What is a pellegrina?

A pellegrina is a short shoulder cape attached to a cassock, historically worn by Roman Catholic clergy and many Anglo-Catholic priests. It falls roughly to mid-bicep and is set into the cassock’s shoulder seam.

Why does the cassock have 33 buttons?

Thirty-three buttons on the placket are a traditional Roman cassock convention, often associated with the years of Christ’s earthly life. The convention is widely retained across Roman and Anglo-Catholic clergy wear.

Can the pellegrina be removed?

On Tranquilum the pellegrina is set into the shoulder seam and is not detachable. For ministers who want a button-on or removable cape, choose Caelorum or Navis and add an unattached shoulder cape separately.

Is the cape lined?

Yes. The pellegrina is fully lined with a smooth lining cloth so it sits cleanly on the shoulders, retains its shape, and slides easily over the cassock body without snagging.
