The Dominion holds to the older preacher-robe tradition: rich, all-black, with no contrast color and no visible hardware. The orphrey is a soft black velvet that catches sanctuary light just enough to read three-dimensional, while the body fabric reads true matte. The contrast is in texture, not color, which is why this robe still looks correct in liturgical, academic, and free-church settings alike.
Velvet Orphrey and Doctoral Bars
The orphrey panel runs from collar to hem in slim, even widths and is mitered at the corners for a clean turn. Three black velvet doctoral bars are stitched onto each sleeve at evenly spaced intervals; each bar is bound at the edges so it sits flush against the sleeve without curling. The velvet is a low-pile cotton-rayon blend that resists shine on camera.
Construction and Inner Build
A traditional yoke and cartridge-pleated back give the body its full, dignified fall. The front closes with a covered two-way zipper hidden behind the orphrey, and the placket is reinforced with a fused interlining so the front edge stays straight. Inner shoulder canvas keeps the velvet bars flat as you move, and the cuffs are interlined to hold a tailored shape.
Fabric, Weight, and Care
The shell is a year-round wool-polyester blend at approximately 230–240 gsm, selected for true black depth and a clean matte finish under sanctuary and broadcast lighting. Velvet trims are colorfast cotton-rayon. Dry clean recommended; steam on low to refresh the orphrey panel and bars. Stored on a wide hanger, the robe holds its shape without sagging at the shoulders.

Is this robe appropriate without a doctorate?
Three velvet bars are traditionally associated with an earned doctorate in academic dress, but many free-church and non-denominational ministers choose this trim for its formal pulpit aesthetic. Either use is acceptable; if you prefer a plain sleeve we can adjust on a made-to-measure order.
How does it differ from a choir gown?
A choir gown is typically lighter, looser, and less structured. The Dominion has a heavier shell, an orphrey panel, doctoral bars, and a tailored yoke, so it reads as a preacher’s pulpit robe rather than a choir vestment.
Will the velvet pick up lint?
Some lint is normal on velvet. We recommend a simple lint roller before service and storing the robe on a wide hanger inside a breathable garment bag between uses.
