The Flowing Purple Robe for Ordained Ministry

The Violatus Flowing Robe is designed for ordained ministers and clergy who vest in a robe rather than – or in addition to – a cassock. The robe form is distinct from the cassock: open at the front rather than buttoned through, with wider, more generous sleeves and a flowing silhouette that moves freely rather than following the body’s line. In many Protestant, Pentecostal, and non-denominational traditions, the robe is the primary vestment of ordained ministry, and purple is reserved for senior pastors, bishops, and presiding elders.

The Violatus is cut to give the minister a commanding presence in the pulpit and at the altar. The flowing silhouette reads clearly from the back of a large congregation, and the wide sleeves frame gestures and movements during preaching and worship leadership. The consistent deep purple colour communicates the authority and anointing associated with ordained senior ministry in many traditions.

Fabric, Construction and Care

The Violatus is constructed from a flowing woven fabric with enough drape to fall cleanly from the shoulders and move freely during preaching and worship. The fabric has sufficient body to hold the robe’s shape without stiffness, and the deep purple is applied with a dye process selected for colour retention through the frequent laundering that a working vestment demands.

The robe is machine washable on a delicate cycle. Hang immediately after washing to avoid creasing, and press on a medium setting if required. The open front and wide sleeves simplify pressing considerably compared to a cassock. For best colour preservation, wash in cold water and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Who This Robe Is For

The Violatus is for senior pastors, presiding bishops, and ordained ministers in traditions that use the robe as their primary vestment and purple as the colour of episcopal or senior authority. It is suitable for Sunday worship, ordination services, installation ceremonies, and any occasion where the minister’s vestment communicates ordained authority and dignity to the congregation.

Available in standard chest sizes 38–60 in Short, Regular and Long lengths.

FAQs

What is the difference between a clergy robe and a cassock?

A cassock is a close-fitting, button-through garment worn as a base layer or on its own. A robe (like the Violatus) is an open-front outer vestment with wider sleeves and a flowing silhouette. Robes are common in Protestant, Pentecostal, and non-denominational traditions; cassocks are more typical in Anglican, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox traditions.

What traditions use a purple clergy robe?

Many Protestant and Pentecostal denominations use purple robes to denote episcopal authority, senior pastoral office, or ordination. The specific use of purple varies by denomination – always check your tradition’s specific vestment requirements.

Is the Violatus available in extended sizes?
