The Everyday Clergy Shirt
Sacerdos is a short-sleeve black shirt designed for the hours when a full cassock or robe is not required but clerical identity still is. Hospital visits, parish office hours, pastoral calls, classroom teaching, community events, diocesan meetings: these are the settings where a shirt does the work, and Sacerdos is built for all of them.
The black is a true, dense black that holds its depth after repeated laundering rather than fading toward charcoal. Black is the universal daily-wear color for ordained clergy across Anglican, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Reformed traditions, and it pairs with the white clerical tab to form the most immediately recognizable sign of ordained ministry outside of vestments.
Collar and Closure
The stand collar is cut specifically for a removable white clerical tab. The collar band height is sized so the tab sits centered in the opening without slipping down or riding up, and the collar itself is stiff enough to hold its shape throughout the day without wilting in warm weather.
The front closure is a concealed button placket. The buttons are hidden behind a fabric overlap so the center front reads as a clean, unbroken line from collar to hem. This matters for a shirt because a visible button row looks casual, and the concealed placket keeps the garment reading as professional clerical attire rather than a standard dress shirt.
Cut and Fit
The body is tailored with a slight taper from the bust to the hip, fitted enough to look intentional without being tight. The shirt sits at hip length, ending below the waistband whether worn with trousers or a skirt. This length means it stays in place when seated in a car, at a desk, or in a hospital chair without pulling up and exposing the waistband underneath.
The sleeves are short, ending at the elbow with a plain hem edge. They are set in at the shoulder rather than cut as a raglan or dropped shoulder, which keeps the shoulder line clean and structured.
Fabric and Care
Sacerdos is made from a poly cotton blend, which gives it two practical qualities that matter for a garment worn multiple days a week: breathability from the cotton content and wrinkle resistance from the polyester. A clerical shirt that creases badly by midday stops looking professional, and an all-cotton shirt in a warm building or a summer climate will do exactly that. The blend holds its press through a full working day.
The fabric has a matte finish with no sheen, which keeps the black reading as a deep, flat black rather than picking up shine under fluorescent office lighting or outdoor sun.
Care: machine wash cold, tumble dry low. The poly cotton blend is designed for regular home laundering. Remove promptly from the dryer and hang or fold to avoid setting creases. Light steaming smooths any remaining wrinkles. No dry cleaning required.
