White and Blue: The Colours of Mary
The Candentia draws its name from the Latin candidus (shining white, radiant) and carries in its colours the most recognisable Marian symbol in Catholic devotional tradition: white for purity, blue for Our Lady’s heavenly queenship. The combination of a white ground cassock with blue accent trim appears in Marian shrines, Marian congregations, and Marian feast celebrations worldwide, and the Candentia is designed to give clergy a vestment that speaks to that tradition with precision and quality.
The pelerine (a short cape-like collar overlay that sits across the shoulders) is finished in the blue accent and provides a broad horizontal band of colour at the upper body, ensuring the Marian reference is immediately legible from the distance of the sanctuary or the outdoor procession. The blue sash at the waist repeats the accent and provides the structural anchoring of the garment below, creating a strong visual grammar: white field, blue accent above, blue anchor below.
Blue Pelerine and Sash Construction
The pelerine of the Candentia sits over the shoulders and falls to approximately mid-chest level, constructed in the same blue accent fabric as the sash. It is finished at its lower edge with a clean hem and lies flat against the body of the cassock beneath. The pelerine creates a layered effect at the upper body that distinguishes the Candentia from cassocks with simple trim piping: it is a structural element, not a linear decoration.
The blue sash is proportioned for the traditional wrapped-and-knotted style at the waist, with pendant ends of appropriate length. The blue of the sash and pelerine is matched to a Marian blue that reads clearly against the white ground in both daylight and artificial sanctuary lighting.
Fabric, Construction and Care
The Candentia body is constructed in a suiting fabric in a matte white ground. The pelerine and sash are constructed in a matching blue fabric.
For care guidance, see our Care Instructions. The blue pelerine should be stored flat or rolled to prevent permanent fold marks at the shoulder seams.
Who This Cassock Is For
The Candentia is designed for clergy who celebrate or participate in Marian liturgies, feast days, and devotional occasions where the white-and-blue colour association is both appropriate and meaningful. It is particularly suited to Roman Catholic priests and deacons for use on the Feasts of the Immaculate Conception (December 8), Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11), the Annunciation (March 25), and the Assumption (August 15), as well as for rosary devotions, May crownings, and October month-of-the-Rosary observances.
It is also an appropriate vestment for clergy who serve Marian confraternities, parishes dedicated to Our Lady, or sanctuaries and shrines in her honour, where wearing the Marian colours is both a devotional statement and a liturgical alignment.
