Description

A Faithful Reading of the Roman Cassock Tradition

The Canonus has been drafted from historical Roman cassock patterns used in seminaries and parish clergy outfitting for over a century. The garment is single-breasted, fastens edge-to-edge with 33 covered buttons running from the stand collar to the hem, and is shaped through the bodice with discreet princess seams that lay flat under a chasuble or surplice. The hem falls to the ankle on a Regular fitting, with adjusted lengths offered for Tall and Short builds.

Construction and Hardware

Each of the 33 buttons is fabric-covered to match the cassock shell, sewn through a reinforced placket and backed with a hidden hook-and-eye at the throat for a clean line under a Roman collar. Side-entry pockets sit at hip height with bound openings, an internal breast pocket holds a stole or breviary, and a centre-back vent allows movement when kneeling or processing. Cuffs are plain (un-trimmed) on the standard Canonus; a Monsignor red-trim variant can be ordered as a configuration option at checkout.

Fabric and Care

The shell is a four-season wool-polyester gabardine (approximately 55% wool / 45% polyester) chosen for matte appearance, wrinkle resistance and dimensional stability through repeated wear. Internal seams are bound; the bodice is half-lined for breathability through the back panel. Care: dry clean only; steam between wears on a wool setting.

Who This Cassock Is For

Suited to Roman Catholic priests, deacons and seminarians who prefer the unadorned, traditional 33-button silhouette for daily wear, choir dress, parish offices and house wear. The Canonus also serves Anglican and Old Catholic clergy who follow the Roman pattern, and is a frequent choice for ordinands requesting a faithful, undecorated cassock for their first liturgical vestiture.
