Description
For the great days of the year
The Discipulus Full-Length Monastic Robe is the habit communities reach for when the calendar turns to a solemnity. It is drafted slightly longer than the Fraternus — the hem brushes the foot — and pattern-graded for a fuller sweep through the back. The result is a robe that moves with the rhythm of procession and chants rather than against it.
Fabric and feel
Fine wool blend in matte black or oyster cream (specify at order). It is finer in hand than the Fraternus shell, with a slight inner pile that holds its colour under sanctuary lighting. Cool to the touch and quiet to the ear; you can sit, kneel, and rise without rustle.
Construction details
Hand-finished cowl with a tape-bound neckline and a cleanly mitred shoulder. Sleeves hang to a softly tapered cuff. Internal hanging-tape at the neck for storage on a hook. Single concealed hip pocket. The hem is double-folded and weight-tested so the cloth falls in straight folds. Cincture sold separately.
Who it is for
Monasteries observing a traditional choir, abbatial communities preparing for major feasts, ordination and professional liturgies, and any house that wants one habit reserved strictly for solemn occasions. For day-to-day wear, the Fraternus is the natural companion.
SIZING AND MADE-TO-MEASURE
Standard sizes: US chest 36–54, in Regular, Tall, and Short height runs. Body length and sleeve length adjust automatically with the height run; tall runs allow up to a floor-skim hem. Made-to-measure available for chest, shoulder, sleeve, full body length, cowl depth, sleeve taper, and pocket placement. Lead time for MTM orders is 12–15 working days from approved measurements.
FAQs
Q: Is Discipulus suitable as a daily habit?
A: It is built for solemn use rather than ordinary wear. For daily Office and community work we recommend our Fraternus Traditional Monastic Robe, which uses the same family of patterns at a more practical weight.
Q: Will the cloth show wear from kneeling?
A: The fine wool blend has been chosen specifically for solemn use; it holds press, returns to shape, and resists the shine that ordinary choir cloth develops at the knees and elbows.
Q: Can the hem be shortened after delivery?
A: Yes — the double-folded hem is finished so it can be raised by a local tailor if needed, although we recommend ordering in the correct height run from the start.
