The Tailored Black Clergy Shirt
Innocentia is the fitted counterpart to Prisca. Both are black long-sleeve shirts with tab collars, concealed closures, and button cuffs. The difference is in the body: Prisca uses a relaxed, straight-cut construction for comfort and ease, while Innocentia is darted at the bust and waist to give the shirt a shaped silhouette that follows the wearer’s figure.
The tailored fit is not tight. It is closer through the torso than a relaxed shirt, with visible waist suppression that gives the garment a defined shape rather than a boxy drape. For clergy who wear their shirt under a blazer, suit jacket, or cassock, a tailored body sits cleaner under outerwear because there is no excess fabric to bunch or fold at the sides.
Why Tailored Fit Matters in a Clergy Shirt
Clerical shirts are professional attire, not workwear. The difference between a shaped shirt and a straight-cut shirt is the same difference between a tailored blouse and an oversized one in any professional setting. Innocentia is designed for the clergy who want their daily shirt to look as considered as the rest of their wardrobe, whether they are preaching from a pulpit, sitting across a desk from a parishioner, or standing at a conference lectern.
The darted construction also means the concealed placket sits flatter down the center front. On a relaxed-fit shirt, the placket can gap slightly when the wearer moves because the fabric has room to shift. On a darted shirt, the fabric is held closer to the body, so the placket stays closed without pulling.
Sleeve and Cuff Construction
The sleeves are tapered from the upper arm to the wrist, narrower than Prisca’s straight-cut sleeve. They end in a single-button barrel cuff that sits close to the wrist and slides cleanly under a jacket or blazer sleeve. The taper means the sleeve does not billow or catch when reaching forward, which matters for altar preparation, writing at a desk, and vesting over the shirt.
The back yoke seam sits across the upper shoulders. Below it, the back panel is shaped with darts that mirror the front, so the tailored line continues all the way around the shirt rather than stopping at the side seams.
Fabric and Care
Innocentia is made from a poly cotton blend with a matte finish, the same fabric used across the clerical shirt line. On a tailored body, the matte finish matters more than on a relaxed fit because any sheen in the fabric concentrates at the dart points and waist seam, creating visible highlights where the fabric curves. The matte weave stays flat and even across the shaped sections.
The black is dyed to the same dense, saturated standard as Prisca and Sacerdos, so all three shirts match if worn on different days of the same week. No shade variation between the tailored and relaxed versions.
Care: machine wash cold, tumble dry low. Turn inside out before washing. Hang immediately after drying to preserve the darted shape; leaving a tailored shirt crumpled in the dryer will set creases along the dart lines that are harder to steam out than on a straight-cut shirt.
