What This Robe Is, and What the Kente Signals

Kente is the traditional woven cloth of the Ashanti and Ewe peoples of Ghana, made on narrow strip looms in geometric patterns whose colors and motifs each carry named meanings within the tradition. Across the African diaspora, kente has been adopted as a marker of African heritage, ancestral memory and cultural continuity, and in Black American church life it has become one of the most recognizable declarations of that heritage worn alongside ecclesiastical vesture.

The Regalona brings kente into the purple clergy line at the collar and cuffs, the two most visible points on the body. That placement is intentional. The Kente Panels

The kente is the defining element of the robe. Woven in the traditional narrow strip technique in a geometric composition of red, gold, green, orange and black, it is set at two points on the body: as the full stand collar band, and as the deep turn-back cuffs on both sleeves.

At the collar, the kente wraps the full band from front to back, so from any angle the wearer’s neck is framed by the traditional weave rather than by plain purple. Against the deep purple cloth of the body, the multi-color pattern of the kente reads instantly and holds its reading from any distance in a full sanctuary.

At the cuffs, the kente turns back at the wrist to show three or four inches of the weave against the plain purple sleeve. When the arms are lowered, the kente shows at each wrist as a paired horizontal band. When the arms are raised in prayer, benediction or preaching, the kente moves with the gesture and catches sanctuary lighting on the metallic threads within the traditional weave.

The Button Run and the Piping

A full run of gold metallic round buttons runs from the base of the stand collar to the hem down the center front. Unlike the covered cloth buttons on the Amethys and Sapphira, these are true metallic gold buttons, sized to read at a distance and to catch light along the vertical of the robe.

Behind the buttons, a fine gold piped placket runs continuous from top to bottom, threading a single gold line down the center front. That gold line ties the metallic buttons to the metallic notes within the kente weave, so the whole robe reads as one integrated composition of purple, gold and kente rather than as separate elements.

Two welt pockets sit at hip height, cut cleanly into the front panel of the robe. Welt construction keeps the front line clean without adding surface volume from patch pockets.

Cut and Silhouette

The robe follows the full length cassock silhouette shared across the purple line. The bodice is tailored through the body with princess seaming shaping the bust and waist, and the skirt releases into a natural A line to the ankle-length hem. The stand collar is cut at the traditional height and holds a standard preaching tab or a full clerical collar, framed by the kente band on both sides of the tab position.

Fabric and Care

Cut from a high quality lightweight tropical fabric in the body, with the kente panels cut from an authentic traditional weave. In a full length purple robe with kente panels worn under sanctuary lighting through extended services, the weave of the body matters twice over. It moves air, which keeps a full length robe wearable through long liturgies and warm months. The kente panels are stable and colorfast when treated properly.

The purple face is matte in a rich saturated tone. Under sanctuary lighting the purple stays deep and even, and the multi-color kente holds its full color reading against the surround.

Care: dry clean recommended. Kente cloth will not survive a domestic wash cycle without color loss and shrinkage, so home laundering is not advised. Steam lightly on a hanger. Do not press hard on the kente, since pressure can flatten the raised weave and dull the color.

Standard sizing runs in four paired bands, XS/S through L/XL, with Plus 1X and Plus 2X for extended fit. Because the kente cuffs sit at the wrist and the button run sits down the exact center front, fit matters across the sleeve length, bust and waist. If you sit between two bands, size to the smaller for a closer fit through the waist, or the larger for room across the bust and hip.

Each band serves two adjacent conventional sizes.
