A Rochet Coordinated to the Cassock

Reverentia takes a different approach to trim colour than Custodis and Domini. Custodis uses fixed black bands regardless of the cassock beneath. Domini eliminates contrasting bands entirely. Reverentia instead colour-matches the cuff and hem bands to the cassock the wearer will vest with, in this case a magenta episcopal cassock.

Magenta, sometimes called Roman purple or cardinal-adjacent violet, is worn by certain bishops and monsignori in Roman Catholic practice as a rank-specific cassock colour, distinct from the deeper episcopal violet used more broadly. When a bishop’s rochet bands match his cassock exactly, the visual effect is a single continuous colour statement at the collar, cuffs, and hem, with the white rochet body functioning as a unifying panel between the three coordinated points.

Why Match the Trim to the Cassock

A fixed-colour rochet (black bands, as on Custodis) works across any cassock colour because black is neutral and reads as a formal accent regardless of what is worn beneath. A colour-matched rochet like Reverentia is a more deliberate, occasion-specific choice: it is ordered to pair with one specific cassock, and the trim colour is selected to align with that cassock’s exact shade.

This matters most for bishops and dignitaries who wear a rochet as part of a complete, coordinated choir dress ensemble, where the cassock, rochet trim, and often a zucchetto or biretta are all meant to present as a single considered outfit rather than separate pieces assembled from stock. Reverentia is built for that use case.

Construction

The bishop sleeves are the same full, blouson construction used across the rochet line: cut wide through the upper arm and forearm, gathered into a snug band at the wrist. On Reverentia, that cuff band is dyed to match the magenta cassock rather than using the black of Custodis or the plain white of Domini. A small white ruffle extends past the magenta cuff band at the hand, the same finishing detail used on Custodis, giving the sleeve a clean terminal edge regardless of trim colour.

The hem band at the base matches the cuffs, running the full width of the rochet in magenta with a narrow white strip below it. The body is gathered from a flat yoke, falling in soft folds to a near-ankle length, with a round gathered neckline that shows the cassock collar above the rochet.

Fabric and Care

Reverentia is made from soft Toyobo fabric. The white body panels and the magenta trim bands are cut from the same fabric base, dyed separately, and joined at construction. This matters for care: two different dye lots (white and magenta) are now present on a single garment, and they can respond differently to heat and detergent.

Care: dry clean strongly recommended for Reverentia specifically, more so than for Custodis or Domini, because of the risk of magenta dye bleeding into the white body panels during any home laundering. If home laundering is attempted, use cold water only, wash separately from any other garment, and check the water colour after the first cycle before proceeding. Steam rather than press; do not iron directly over the colour junction where magenta meets white.

Sizing and Made to Measure

Reverentia is available across a range of sizes for clergy. Size by height and shoulder width, matching the standard rochet sizing approach.

Made to measure is available with a 3 to 4 week lead time. Because Reverentia’s trim colour is matched to a specific cassock, made to measure orders should include a fabric swatch or reference from the cassock in question so we can dye-match the cuff and hem bands as closely as possible. For episcopal households ordering rochet and cassock together, we recommend ordering both from the same production run to guarantee an exact colour match.

FAQs

Can Reverentia be ordered with cuff and hem bands in a different colour?

Yes. Reverentia’s defining feature is the coordinated trim, not the specific magenta shown in the product images. If you need the bands matched to a different cassock colour, order made to measure and provide a swatch or reference sample so we can match the dye as closely as possible.

Why is magenta used here rather than the deeper purple seen on Domini’s cassock?

Magenta and the deeper episcopal violet are two distinct shades used in Roman Catholic practice, generally corresponding to different ranks or offices. Reverentia is shown with a magenta cassock to demonstrate the colour-matching concept; the same construction works with any cassock shade.

Is a colour-matched rochet more formal than a black-banded or all-white one?

Not more formal in a fixed hierarchy sense, but it is more deliberate. A colour-matched rochet signals that the piece was selected or made specifically to coordinate with a particular cassock, which is common for bishops assembling a complete choir dress set rather than mixing stock pieces.

Does the risk of dye bleeding mean I should avoid washing Reverentia at home entirely?

Dry cleaning is the safer choice given the two-colour construction. If home laundering is necessary, cold water and washing separately reduce the risk significantly, but there is no fully risk-free way to launder a two-tone garment at home the way there is with the single-colour Domini.
