Description
A dark Roman alb made for the schola and the traditional altar
Many traditional choir lofts and Latin Mass altar parties prefer a dark base garment under the white surplice so the eye reads as crisp white over deep black, not a muddy off-white. The Ornatus answers that need with a Roman-cut shape, a tailored stand collar, and a slim full-length skirt in midnight black, all in liturgical proportions familiar from the cassock tradition.
Signature feature: Roman stand collar with hidden placket
The 1.4 inch interfaced stand collar holds its line through long offices, and the central button placket sits behind a fabric flap so nothing breaks the dark vertical line under the surplice. Black-on-black covered shank buttons and matte top-stitching keep the closure invisible from the choir loft.
Slim straight cut for clean layering under surplice
The skirt is cut closer than a traditional gathered alb so a surplice or cotta can sit smoothly over it without billowing. Side seams run straight from underarm to hem with no flare, and the back is split with a 6 inch hidden vent so kneelers and prie-dieu work with clergy who must rise quickly between sung sections.
Matte black wool-touch fabric and care
100% polyester wool-touch suiting in deep midnight black, mid-weight at approximately 230 GSM, with a soft matte finish that does not shine under sanctuary spots. Machine wash cold on delicate, hang to dry, and steam out travel creases. Avoid hot dryers, which can dull the matte finish over time.

FAQs
Why is this alb black instead of white?
It is purpose-made as a dark base layer for clergy and servers who wear a surplice or cotta over it – the same role a cassock plays – so the surplice’s white reads cleanly against deep black rather than a softer off-white.
Can it be worn for an Ordinary Form Mass?
Yes, when used as a base layer under a surplice for choir, MCs, or instituted acolytes. For Mass celebration itself, please choose one of our white albs such as the Albanor, Albion, or Sanctum.
Does it have a back vent for kneeling?
Yes, a 6 inch hidden back vent at the hem allows easier kneeling and rising at the prie-dieu without straining the side seams.
Will the matte black hold up to repeated washing?
Yes – the wool-touch polyester is colorfast and the matte finish is a fabric property, not a coating. Wash on delicate cold and avoid hot dryers to keep the depth of color over years of choir service.
