What This Robe Is
The Vesperis is a full length cassock robe cut in the traditional Anglican Roman style, translated for women. The Roman cut is the single breasted cassock with a full run of buttons down the center front, distinct from the double breasted Sarum cut that folds across the body. It is the most widely worn cassock silhouette in the Anglican Communion, in the Roman Catholic Church, and in Old Catholic and Continuing Anglican jurisdictions.
The red trim is meaningful. In Anglican and Catholic jurisdictions, red buttons and piping on an otherwise black cassock have traditionally marked the wearer as a chaplain to the sovereign or bishop, a member of a cathedral chapter, or a rank above parish priest. In many Protestant traditions today the red trim marks the senior pastor, the presiding elder, or an ordained minister of chapter rank. The Vesperis is designed to hold that reading with the color placed exactly where the tradition places it: at the collar edge, down the button run, at the placket piping, and at the sleeve cuffs.
The Cassock Cut
The robe follows the Roman cassock silhouette. The front closes edge to edge with a full run of covered buttons from the base of the stand collar to the hem, so the eye follows a single unbroken vertical line down the full length of the body. Behind the button run, a fine red piped placket carries the vertical red line even where the buttons themselves are spaced apart.
The stand collar is cut at the traditional height and holds a standard preaching tab or a full clerical collar. A fine red band edges the top of the collar, framing the tab or collar against the black. That is the traditional detail: a black collar with red top edge, showing the white tab or collar clean against both.
The bodice is tailored through the body with princess seaming shaping the bust and waist, and the skirt releases into a natural A line to the ankle-length hem. Length is deliberately full, since a cassock cropped shorter than the ankle reads as a coat rather than as vesture.
The Sleeves
The sleeves are long and slim to the wrist, in keeping with the tailored Roman cut rather than the wide bell sleeves of the older monastic habit or the bishop sleeves of the preacher robe. Each sleeve is ringed at the wrist with a single fine red piping band that echoes the piped placket down the front, tying the whole vestment together as one continuous red-and-black composition.
Fabric and Care
Cut from a high quality lightweight tropical fabric. In a full length black cassock worn head to toe through daily office, extended services and warm sanctuaries, the weave matters twice over. It moves air, which keeps a full length black garment wearable through long liturgies and summer months. And it drops creases on the hanger, so the cassock holds a clean vertical line rather than picking up folds behind the button run.
The black face is matte. The red pieces are cut in the same weave in a deep ecclesiastical red rather than a bright scarlet or a burgundy, placing the color firmly in the vestment tradition where it carries centuries of association. Under sanctuary lighting the black stays deep and the red reads rich rather than glaring.
Care: dry clean recommended, both to protect the black and to prevent the red piping from bleeding into it. If you launder at home, wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color safe detergent, and never wash with lighter colored garments. Steam lightly on a hanger. Do not press hard along the piping, as pressure can flatten the raised line.

Standard sizing runs in four paired bands, XS/S through L/XL, with Plus 1X and Plus 2X for extended fit. Because the button run sits down the exact center front, fit matters most across the bust and waist so the buttons hold a straight vertical line. If you sit between two bands, size to the smaller for a closer fit through the waist, or the larger for room across the bust and hip.
