The black habit of the Benedictine tradition
The Abbot’s Midnight is a traditional black habit for monks living the Rule of Saint Benedict: stability, humility and service. Its deep black colour has marked Benedictines for centuries, and its simple, full cut serves equally well in choir, at work and in quiet devotion.
Signature feature: deep hood and shoulder-length cowl
A deep hood is joined to a cowl that drapes over the chest and back to the shoulders. It gives full, modest coverage during the Office and outdoor processions, and lies in soft folds across the shoulders when the hood is down.
Construction
The habit falls full-length with wide sleeves that allow free movement for reading, chanting and manual work. A rope cincture ties at the waist and is traditionally knotted three times for the monastic vows.
Fabric choice and care
Choose breathable cotton (included) for everyday wear in the cloister, chapel and garden, or lightweight tropical suiting (+$30) for a smoother drape and comfort in hot, humid climates. Cotton: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang to dry and press with a warm iron. Tropical: dry clean, or hand wash cold and steam to refresh. Store on a broad hanger so the hood and shoulders keep their shape.
