A plain black habit for life within the cloister
The Regula follows the old ideal of simplicity: a solid black habit with nothing added that is not needed. It is the habit for ordinary days of prayer, study and work, quiet enough for the cloister and dignified enough for choir.
Signature feature: deep hood and short shoulder cape
A short cape covers the shoulders beneath a deep hood. Together they frame the face and upper body when the hood is raised and lie neatly across the back when it is down, giving the habit its recognisable cloistered outline.
Construction
The body is cut straight and full to the ankle with roomy sleeves. A knotted rope cincture ties at the waist; many communities tie it with three knots for the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
Fabric choice and care
Choose breathable cotton (included) for everyday wear in the cloister, chapel and garden, or lightweight tropical suiting (+$30) for a smoother drape and comfort in hot, humid climates. Cotton: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang to dry and press with a warm iron. Tropical: dry clean, or hand wash cold and steam to refresh. Store on a broad hanger so the hood and shoulders keep their shape.
