The complete black habit in three pieces
The Silentium is the habit many people picture when they think of Benedictine life: a black tunic, a scapular worn over it, and a simple cincture. Each piece is separate, so the habit can be layered exactly as your community’s custom requires.
Signature feature: the full-length scapular
The scapular is a long panel of cloth worn over the shoulders and falling front and back to the hem. It is the traditional sign of the monk’s apron of work and obedience, and it gives the habit its strong vertical line in choir and procession.
Construction
The tunic is cut full-length with roomy sleeves for ease of movement. The scapular sits over it without fastenings, and a thin natural-jute cincture ties at the waist, finished with a small leather pouch that keeps a rosary, keys or a pocket breviary close at hand.
Fabric choice and care
Choose breathable cotton (included) for everyday wear in the cloister, chapel and garden, or lightweight tropical suiting (+$30) for a smoother drape and comfort in hot, humid climates. Cotton: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang to dry and press with a warm iron. Tropical: dry clean, or hand wash cold and steam to refresh. Store on a broad hanger so the hood and shoulders keep their shape.
