The white habit of the Cistercian tradition
The Cistercian White habit follows the custom of the white monks, who chose plain undyed cloth as a sign of purity and simplicity. It is made for a life of prayer, study and manual work, and its clean white colour stands out quietly in choir.
Signature feature: pointed hood and shoulder-length cowl
A deep, pointed hood is joined to a cowl that drapes across the shoulders. It gives traditional coverage during processions and prayer, and frames the face with the distinctive pointed outline of the Cistercian hood.
Construction
The habit is cut full-length with wide, long sleeves for unrestricted movement. A rope cincture ties at the waist to secure the habit and keep its line neat through the day.
Fabric choice and care
Choose breathable cotton (included) for everyday wear in the cloister, chapel and garden, or lightweight tropical suiting (+$30) for a smoother drape and comfort in hot, humid climates. Cotton: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, hang to dry and press with a warm iron. Tropical: dry clean, or hand wash cold and steam to refresh. Store on a broad hanger so the hood and shoulders keep their shape.
